- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1.5 cups granulated sugar
- 0.5 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1.5 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 0.5 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 0.5 cup vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
- For Frosting: 1 cup unsalted butter, softened; 4 cups powdered sugar; 0.5 cup unsweetened cocoa powder; 0.33 cup milk; 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
- Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes.
- Carefully stir in the boiling water. The batter will be thin.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting it onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- While the cake cools, prepare the frosting. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy.
- Gradually add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, alternating with the milk, beating until smooth and spreadable. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Once the cake is completely cool, spread the frosting evenly over the top.
Notes
- For a deeper chocolate flavor, use dark unsweetened cocoa powder.
- Ensure your boiling water is indeed boiling when adding it to the batter.
- Do not overmix the batter after adding the boiling water.
