Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (15 ounce) can diced tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional toppings: shredded cheese, sour cream, chopped cilantro

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat.
  2. Add ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain off any excess grease.
  3. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
  5. Pour in the crushed tomatoes and diced tomatoes.
  6. Add chili powder, cumin, oregano, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine.
  7. Bring the chili to a simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for at least 30 minutes, or up to 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
  8. Ladle into bowls and serve with your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • For a spicier chili, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a diced jalapeño with the onions.
  • You can substitute ground turkey or a plant-based ground for the beef.
