Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 8-inch cake pans.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add softened butter and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before inverting them onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- While the cakes cool, prepare the frosting. Beat softened butter until creamy.
- Gradually add powdered sugar, alternating with milk, until smooth and fluffy. Stir in vanilla extract.
- Once the cakes are completely cool, assemble and frost them.
- Cover the cake with a thin layer of frosting (crumb coat). Chill for 30 minutes.
- Apply a thicker, final layer of frosting.
- Decorate the cake with fondant to create Rococo-inspired designs, adding edible pearls and gold leaf for an opulent finish.
